Regional Development Victoria, Melbourne Show 2014

This stand for the Department of State Development, Business & Innovation – Regional Development Victoria, had a brief to create an interactive space where children could play while their parents looked up careers, businesses and homes on the computer console.

The Regional Development Victoria stand provided a vibrant, interactive environment for families planning their move to Regional Victoria. It was a welcoming space one step removed from the hustle and bustle of the Royal Melbourne Show.

Visitors explored the opportunities (five pillars) available to them in Regional Victoria through interacting with the staff or looking up resources on the computer kiosks. Children were invited by a facilitator to add their mark to the community artwork.

We were responsible for documenting how the activities would run, providing staff, as well as the design, which included a rock climbing wall and magnetic fishing game. The central feature was a community painting project facilitated by an artist.

It was challenging to meet all the needs of accessibility, risk management and adequate supervision. My experience running large events with Girl Guides Victoria was a great help.
The initial concept proposed for the tender used graphics pulled from the Good Move website. We also had to propose how the stand would work from an experiential point of view, and ensure adequate staffing and supervision for the activities.
The finalised renders showed the client a more detailed, refined design, prior to our graphic design and signage departments completing their work.

The document showed how the different areas of the stand would work:
- Information desk and iPad data capture kiosk
- Signage and branding advertising the 2015 Regional Victoria Living Expo
- Jobs & businesses hub with newspaper covered house and computers
- Kids fishing experience and photo opportunity
- Traverse wall
- Cafe experience with barista made coffee
- Community artwork project reinforcing the message “Make your mark in the Regions”
